We are committed to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion and eliminating structural racism and inequities within the organization, the field of education abroad, and our communities.

Core Beliefs

• We believe that equity, diversity, and inclusion should be embedded within the structure of the organization and integral to the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad.​
• We believe that the inclusion and celebration of each individual’s intersecting identities, experiences, and abilities enriches our organization and our work with members, professionals, and students.
• We believe that education abroad can be a tool for cultivating anti-racist and decolonial thought in students and stakeholders.
• We believe in creating safe spaces and brave spaces for belonging, communication, sharing and learning.
• We believe we have the responsibility to actively inform and engage the field of education abroad in a way that fosters inclusion, promotes equity, and combats structural racism systemically and sustainably.

How We Manifest This:

By engaging in dialogue, collaboration, sharing best practices, research and innovation, and professional development, The Forum strives to address and provide critical resources and a forum for discussion for the field of education abroad, with particular consideration of groups who have been historically excluded or marginalized impacting access to education abroad.

Making Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion the Standard: Asynchronous Course

Making Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion the Standard is a self-paced, fully asynchronous course is designed to guide global educators in prioritizing equity, diversity, and inclusion as part of the education abroad experience. 

Developed by EDI experts in the field and grounded in the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad, the course includes six modules that cover key topics in education abroad like supporting underrepresented students, creating more inclusive teams and leaders, and more.

Upon completion, learners will gain a comprehensive view of equity, diversity, and inclusion in U.S. higher education today. 

In addition to the existing EDI scholarships available from The Forum, CIS Abroad celebrates its 25th anniversary by offering funding to support 50 additional scholarships for the course.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Planning Toolkit

The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Planning Toolkit provides colleagues with tools and guidance to help ensure your equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts are embedded within the structure of your office meet the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad.  

Included are tools and resources designed to be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of any institution or organization, addressing all aspects and phases of education abroad and all stakeholders, from learners to local communities to faculty, staff, and administrators. 

​Please note: The Forum on Education Abroad is an international organization based in the U.S. and the Toolkit is presented through a U.S. lens. We propose in it one approach that may be helpful to administrators and faculty at higher education institutions and international education organizations based in the U.S. and around the world. Colleagues interested in learning about U.S. perspectives on these topics may find it useful.

We acknowledge that our approach is not universal and may require reflection and refinement from international colleagues before being applied in their local contexts. ​

​​Supporting Transgender and Nonbinary Students in Education Abroad (2024)

The Forum's Supporting Transgender and Non-Binary Students in Education Abroad 2023-24 Working Group created this collection of resources to provide guidance on supporting transgender and non-binary students participating in education abroad programming. It aims to provide a framework for inclusive practices, with the understanding that these practices will continue to evolve over time. The 43-page resource covers terms and definitions, program design considerations, marketing, advising, the X Gender marker on US Passports, pre-departure and on-site orientations, gender inclusive housing, and gendered language.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad, 6th ed.

The sixth edition of the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad places equity, diversity, and inclusion as cornerstones for best practice in education abroad program design and management and student recruitment and support. This poster provides an overview of how the Standards apply to our work and how they can help identify strengths and areas for improvement on the quest for more equitable, inclusive, and diverse education abroad programs.
