The Foundations in Education Abroad Toolkit provides education abroad offices with foundational knowledge to assist in establishing new or expanding existing education abroad programming in accordance with the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad and the Code of Ethics for Education Abroad. It provides a framework for establishing effective and holistic global learning opportunities that align with institutional mission, values, learning outcomes, and curricular goals. Included are tools and resources designed to be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of any institution.

1. Implementation Guide  
This guide was developed to assist in building a strong foundation for education abroad that aligns with the Standards of Good Practice in Education Abroad and the Code of Ethics for Education Abroad. This detailed checklist includes practical components for all phases of program development and delivery that may involve various stakeholders. It is designed to be customizable for your institutional context, with fields to enter responsible parties and timelines.

4. External and Affiliated Program Approval Process and Template 
 
A clear review and approval process enables institutions to conduct meaningful reviews of programs approved for credit and financial aid transfer. Such a process also ensures compliance with accreditation and federal funding guidelines. This resource includes a suggested process for approving external and affiliated programs, as well as an approval form template.

Site evaluators can use this practical tool to operate processes of systematic and comprehensive information-gathering during exploratory site visits.  ​

6. Sample Memorandum of Agreement 
 
This is an agreement template adaptable to diverse types of institutions and contexts. It is strongly advised that any agreements be reviewed and approved by institutional general counsel or risk managers prior to signature.

The pre-departure phase for education abroad begins with initial communication about education abroad opportunities to students. Each communication, event, and activity should be designed to manage student expectations and prepare them for success while abroad. This resource helps education abroad offices and institutions create an emergency action plan (EAP) specific to their needs. It is important to involve key stakeholders in responding to any emergency occurring abroad and consider all potential outcomes to respond and manage impact on students, community partners, the education abroad program, and the institution. All EAPs should be reviewed with your institutional risk manager and endorsed by institutional leadership before implementation. ​
