The Annual Institute on Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management is the premiere event for education abroad professionals focused on risk management issues.

For 14 years, The Forum’s Health and Safety Institute has provided attendees with tools to strengthen institutional and organizational strategies for risk mitigation, incident prevention, emergency response, and overall wellbeing for education abroad participants.

Focused on the theme “Rebuilding the Field for Resilience,” the 2023 Health and Safety Institute features concurrent and plenary sessions on topics including:

• The changing landscape of students’ experiences abroad​
• Best practices for supporting the health, safety, and security of underserved and underrepresented populations in education abroad
• Promoting emotional wellbeing for faculty, staff, and students
• Supporting participants through robust pre-departure preparation

GOALS OF THE INSTITUTE

• Enhance the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad by analyzing requirements and sharing examples of best practices;
• Explore approaches from within as well as outside the field of education abroad; and
• Enhance the overall safety and security of education abroad for the benefit of all participants.

TOPICS OF INTEREST TO THIS YEAR’S INSTITUTE

At this year’s Health and Safety Institute, we’ll explore the theme “Rebuilding the Field for Resilience” through the following topics:
​

• The changing landscape of students’ experiences abroad
  • This topic includes research, internships, service learning, short-term travel, travel to more non-traditional locations, and meeting the personalization and customization needs of current students.
• Promoting emotional wellbeing for faculty, staff, and students
• Supporting participants through robust pre-departure preparation
• Best practices for supporting the health, safety, and security of underserved and underrepresented populations in education abroad
• Preparing faculty to lead education abroad programs
  • This topic includes defining roles, responsibilities, and good practices in faculty-led programs.
• Accomplishing more with less and managing competing priorities in under-resourced offices
  • This topic includes: scaling for reduced staffing/resources, changing definition of risk management profession, one person offices vs teams of support.
• Climate change and its impact on risk assessment and mitigation in education abroad
• Grappling with impossible questions (for example: nuclear fallout, cybersecurity, etc.) and setting expectations with stakeholders
• The field of international risk management and global health, safety, and security
  • This topic includes seeking a full-time health and safety role, advocating for a position at your institution, collaborating with other practitioners, and thinking strategically amidst the ever-evolving state of higher education.

Naz Beheshti is the author of . She is an executive wellness coach, speaker, Forbes contributor, CEO, and founder of , a corporate wellness company improving leadership effectiveness, employee well-being and engagement, and company culture. Clients include Google, Facebook, Nike, JPMorgan Chase, First Republic Bank, Skadden, Gilead Sciences, Coinbase, UCSF Health, and Columbia University. Her work has been widely featured in the media, including CNBC, Forbes, BBC, Yahoo, Entrepreneur, Inc., Fast Company, and many more. Naz also cofounded Rise2Shine, a nonprofit helping to alleviate the suffering of young children in Haiti. She divides her time between Miami Beach and New York City.

Jonesy offers over 25 years of diverse professional experience ranging in sectors and geographies with a focus on intelligence, security, business operations, corporate travel, incident management, organizational development, and social impact programming.   
 
Jonesy’s career was shaped by experiences within technology and e-commerce (Amazon), retail (Target), entertainment (Sony Pictures), gaming (Sony PlayStatio), hospitality (Airbnb), connected fitness (Peloton), and energy (Southern California Edison).  Additional roles within higher education (Student / Greek Life), nonprofit (Knight Foundation), military (United States Air Force), and Federal (Department of Homeland Security) service round out their professional history.  Jonesy currently teaches ‘Corporate Security Strategies’ online with Mercyhurst University and is the CEO/Founder of NXTG Solutions Consulting.
 
Jonesy enjoys focusing on next generation innovation, value-based change management, and organizational transformation for leaders and groups evolving to exceed customer expectations.  They have significant experience addressing enterprise-wide and community-based crisis planning and response incidents.  Additionally, Jonesy has led corporate business forecasting initiatives, diversity and equity programming, operational effectiveness, risk and crisis management, and strategic planning for teams and organizations of various sizes.
