This 2021 edition reflects changes and advances in education abroad management; a recognition of an expanded view of education abroad to include study, internships, service learning, and research abroad; and an appreciation of how issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion affect health, safety, and security.

These guidelines follow the style of the Standards by offering specific advice and prompts for education abroad professionals to prevent, respond to, and report sexual and gender-based misconduct abroad. They are intended to be used by colleagues operating in countries around the world to create infrastructures that help to protect and support students facing sexual and gender-based misconduct and to guide conversations between partners operating in countries with different regulatory environments related to sexual and gender-based misconduct.

This document is written to help education abroad professionals think through the many steps to make education abroad feasible during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and to mitigate risk associated with education abroad and student mobility during an unprecedented period in our field’s history. It is intended for use within organizations and by partners from different organizations to help guide their development of a plan for returning to and/or scaling up education abroad operations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Annual Institute on Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management is the premiere event for education abroad professionals focused on risk management issues. The Forum’s Health and Safety Institute provides attendees with tools to strengthen institutional and organizational strategies for risk mitigation, incident prevention, emergency response, and overall wellbeing for education abroad participants.
